This is a website focusing on the analysis of song lyrics. The Dylanometer works by linguistically comparing submitted song lyrics with 333 songs for which Bob Dylan was the sole lyricist.
To use the app, click on 'Dylanometer' in the navigation bar above.
If you would like to analyse song lyrics but you wish to compare your lyrics with a broader ranger of composers, you may be interested in the 'Lyric Assessor' (currently located at www.thelyricassessor.com). This is an application designed to analyse the 'quality' of song lyrics where quality is defined by the extent to which a song's lyrics are linguistically similar to a selection of song lyrics written by prominent songwriters such as Cole Porter, Lennon and McCartney and Bob Dylan.
Please note that if you are attempting to analyse a poem rather than a song, it may be that neither the 'Dylanometer' nor the 'Lyric Assessor' are appropriate. This is because song lyrics and poems are very different types of text. A more appropriate app analysing for poetry may be the 'Poetry Assessor' (currently located at www.poetryassessor.com). This is an application designed to analyse the 'quality' of poems. Here, quality is defined by the extent to which a poem is linguistically similar to poems written by prominent poets. A paper outlining the basic methodology of The Poetry Assessor can be found here.
